When you have been working for several years as an educational assistant or facilitator in a school environment, the question eventually arises: how to transition to the other side and obtain the status of a tenured CPE? The path seems locked by the requirement of a master’s degree, but several routes allow for a coherent journey starting from a high school diploma, provided that one clearly identifies the accessible competitions and the intermediate steps.

Third CPE Competition: The Path That Values Professional Experience

Most guides focus on the external competition, which requires a master’s level. This overlooks a concrete option for atypical profiles: the third CPE competition. This route is aimed at candidates who have engaged in professional activity under private law contracts for a specified duration. The idea is not to compensate for a missing diploma with a portfolio, but to have a field experience recognized.

For the 2026 session, the third competition’s tests have been stabilized by the Ministry of National Education. They include a written admissibility test, followed by two oral admission tests: one based on a subject and a file provided by the jury, the other in the form of an interview.

The real difficulty is that this route remains selective. One cannot compensate for the lack of university training with mere seniority. It is necessary to prepare for the tests with the same rigor as an external candidate, mastering the stakes of the educational system, the regulations of school life, and professional interview techniques. Those wishing to become a CPE with a high school diploma benefit from precisely mapping the eligibility conditions before committing to a long preparation.

Building a Degree Path from High School to the External CPE Competition

If the third competition does not match the profile (activity performed in the public sector, insufficient duration), the route involves the progressive acquisition of degrees. The classic scheme: a bachelor’s degree in educational sciences, followed by a master’s degree in MEEF with a focus on educational supervision. This is not the only possible path.

A bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, or human sciences also opens access to the MEEF master’s program. The choice of the bachelor’s degree matters less than the coherence of the path with the missions of the CPE: student monitoring, management of school life, teamwork in multidisciplinary settings.

The recent reform of recruitment competitions creates a transitional period. The ministry indicates that, for two years, competitions may be open to students preparing for a diploma at the bac+3 or bac+5 level to support the transition to the new schedule. In practice, this means that some candidates at the end of their bachelor’s degree could present themselves for the competition under certain conditions, according to the regulations in force in the year of the session.

Distance Learning or Evening Classes for the Bachelor’s Degree

For someone already working in a school (AED, supervisor, extracurricular facilitator), resuming full-time studies is not realistic. Universities and the CNED offer distance learning bachelor’s degrees compatible with paid work. The pace is stretched, often over four years instead of three, but one retains their position and income.

CPE Competition Tests: What Makes the Difference in the Oral Exam

You can prepare for the written test alone with past papers and specialized books. The oral exam, however, requires specific training that many candidates underestimate.

The dossier test simulates a real professional situation. The jury expects a structured analysis, not a recitation of lessons. You must demonstrate that you can diagnose a school life problem, propose concrete actions, and articulate your response with the school’s project.

The interview focuses on motivation and professional posture. Candidates from the field (former AEDs, facilitators, mediators) have an advantage if they can formalize their experience. The classic trap: telling anecdotes without linking them to the expected competencies from the CPE reference framework.

  • Prepare at least three professional situations experienced, analyzed with hindsight (context, actions, results, limitations)
  • Practice for the oral exam with a timer, as time management is part of the evaluation
  • Know the recent regulatory texts on absenteeism, school bullying, and inclusion, which regularly appear in the topics

Internal CPE Competition: An Option for National Education Contractors

The internal competition is aimed at public agents justifying a certain length of service. For an educational assistant or a public service contractor, this route can be more accessible than the external competition, provided that the service duration criteria are met.

The internal competition relies on a RAEP file (recognition of the acquired professional experience). There is no classic written composition: one writes a structured document that outlines their journey and highlights the skills acquired in relation to the missions of the CPE.

Feedback varies on this point, but the preparation of the RAEP file generally takes several months if one wants a solid result. It is not an enriched CV, but a reasoned demonstration of one’s ability to perform the job. Having a current CPE or a specialized trainer review your file significantly improves the quality of the submission.

Planning Your Progression: From High School to the CPE Competition in Realistic Steps

None of these paths work without a precise timeline. The main risk when starting from a high school diploma is to scatter between training, mock competitions, and professional activity without ever finalizing a step.

  • First, check your eligibility for the third competition or the internal competition, as these routes avoid the mandatory master’s degree
  • If the bachelor’s degree is necessary, choose a training program compatible with your professional schedule and aim for a field consistent with education
  • Start preparing for the tests at least a year before the targeted session, alongside the final year of your degree if possible
  • Identify the registration sessions on the Ministry of National Education’s website as early as the previous school year, as registration deadlines are short and non-negotiable

The path to becoming a CPE from a high school diploma is neither quick nor guaranteed. Each competition route imposes its own conditions regarding diplomas or experience. Clarity about your starting point, whether it involves years of service in an institution or a plan to resume studies, determines the strategy to adopt and the actual time to invest.
